SNL tackles 'very disturbing' choir linked to January 6 attacks in latest spoof

This week’s Saturday Night Live shone a spotlight on the J6 Prison Choir whose track, Justice For All, has been utilized throughout Donald Trump’s election campaign.

Former US president Donald Trump was the hot topic on this week’s Saturday Night Live (SNL). Following his indictment on March 30, the 45th president became the focus of this week’s Cold Open segment.

But SNL couldn’t touch on Donald Trump being criminally charged without bringing up the J6 Prison Choir. Let’s take a look at what the team at 30 Rock had to say about their musical offerings.

SNL Cold Open talks J6 Prison Choir

James Austin Johnson returned to our screens impersonating Trump on Saturday night (April 1, 2023). He is largely considered “the best Trump impersonator” and took over full-time after Alec Baldwin.

“Now you may have seen, I’ve been opening my rallies with my wonderful song ‘Justice For All’, which I perform with the J6 Choir,” Johnson as Trump says. “That’s a very real thing, very disturbing.”

“It was the Number 1 downloaded song,” the comedian continues in the SNL segment. “My song raked in so much cash that I thought, why stop there? That’s why I’m putting out my album ‘Now That’s What I Call My Legal Defense Fund’ AKA ‘Trump Bops’ and I’m bringing all the hits.”

Johnson then goes on to perform excerpts from this fictional Trump album.

Is the J6 Prison Choir real?

When James Austin Johnson impersonating Trump said that the J6 Prison Choir is “a very real thing,” he wasn’t lying. They are, in fact, a real choir.

J6 Prison Choir is named for the American citizens who were incarcerated for their involvement in the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. The musical group is comprised of around 20 men who are currently serving jail time for their involvement.

On March 3, 2023, J6 Prison Choir released their first single, Justice For All, with Donald Trump. It is a charity record with the profits going towards the legal aid of those incarcerated for the January 6 attack.

The song has since been linked to Donald Trump’s presidential election campaign. It was used in an opener for Trump’s first 2024 campaign rally in Waco, Texas. Trump has now run for president three times.

Do we know who the members of the choir are?

No, we don’t yet know who makes up the J6 Prison Choir. It has been confirmed that the choir is comprised of a group of around 20 incarcerated individuals, but there are hundreds of citizens in prison in connection to the January 6 Capitol attack. They have not been named as of yet and will not be performing as a choir together at any point soon, considering they remain in prison.

More than 1000 individuals were arrested and charged after storming the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Around 42 percent of those arrested, approximately 420 people, have been charged with criminal offenses. Many are still awaiting trial. Given that there are roughly 20 members of the J6 Prison Choir, that is just 0.02 percent of the overall individuals charged.

Trump does not sing in the choir as a member. However, he features on their debut single, reciting the Pledge of Alleigance.
