Are Thera Tears being recalled in 2023?

A number of eye drops have been recalled in 2023 due to severe injuries in multiple patients caused by a strain of bacteria, but, is Thera Tears one of them?

In February, FDA issued a nationwide voluntary recall on EzriCare Artificial Tears eyedrops, imported from India, over suspicions of contamination by a drug-resistant bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Thera Tears is another popularly used eyedrop and people want to know if it’s safe to use it, amid raising cases of infections and reported deaths in the US.

Are Thera Tears being recalled in 2023?

No, Thera Tears haven’t been recalled in 2023. The eye drops are used as a medication to treat irritated or dry eyes and while using a computer or reading for long hours.

The eye lubricant helps keep your eyes moist and decreases symptoms of itching, dryness and more.

However, it is recommended to wash your hands before applying the drops to your eyes, and for best results, use it at bedtime.

The usage of the product may cause your vision to be blurred temporarily along with minor tingling or irritation. But, if the sensation is persistent, get it checked by a doctor.

Death toll from contaminated eye drops is rising

Reportedly, the infections caused by the contaminated eye drop have resulted in the death of three people in Washington and at least eight people have lost their vision permanently. Meanwhile, four of the affected persons have had their eyeballs removed surgically.

Most of the eye drops affected by the recall are suspected to be contaminated by Pseudomonas, a type of bacteria that is believed to spread in humans due to hands or medical equipment and surfaces that aren’t cleaned properly.

ABC news reports, as of March 14, 68 people across 16 US states were infected with the bacteria.

Symptoms to look out for

FDA has urged anyone experiencing the below symptoms after using EzriCare or Delsam Pharama eye drops to get their eye checked to avoid serious health issues.

  • Yellow, green, or clear discharge from the eye.
  • Eye pain or discomfort.
  • Red eyes or eyelids.
  • Felling of something in the eye.
  • Increased sensitivity to light.
  • Blurry vision.
