Tottenham Hotspur now consider Mauricio Pochettino as the favourite to replace Antonio Conte at the helm. But the Argentine will face competition to be the next Spurs manager.

That is according to Dean Jones, who reports that Pochettino has emerged as the number one candidate to replace Conte. But managers throughout Europe are keeping tabs on the Italian’s future in north London. Several coaches will look to step up if the role is available.

Tottenham are set to conduct wholesale changes in the summer if Conte leaves at the end of his contract. The 53-year-old is increasingly likely to reject the chance to continue at the Premier League club after Spurs wasted their best shot at silverware by exiting the FA Cup.

Tottenham are still in the Champions League but trail AC Milan 1-0 in the Round of 16. The Rossoneri visit north London next Wednesday for the second leg of their tie. But Spurs are out of the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at Championship side Sheffield United in the fifth round.

Spurs chiefs are now considering wholesale changes to the club’s organisational structures if they change head coach this summer. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is yet to rule out giving the club’s next manager the greater levels of control a Pochettino-type will demand.

Pochettino returning as their manager does not appeal to everyone at Tottenham

But Pochettino returning to Tottenham to replace Conte as their manager does not appeal to everyone at the club. Jones also reported recently that some senior Spurs officials feel it would be ‘unwise’ to re-hire the Argentine and let him install the structures he would seek.

Levy is open to naming Pochettino as the manager of Tottenham again, four years after he sacked the 51-year-old. Spurs parted ways with the head coach Pep Guardiola regards as an ‘excellent manager’ only five months after he led them to the Champions League final.

Pochettino spent five years in the Tottenham hot seat and could now replace Conte as the club’s next manager. He has been out of work since Paris Saint-Germain fired him last July.
