AC Milan v SSC Napoli: Quarterfinal First Leg - UEFA Champions League

Tottenham Hotspur have now suffered a huge blow to their interest in the transfer of AC Milan ace Mike Maignan. San Siro chiefs will debate a new contract with his agent.

That is according to Calciomercato, which suggests that reports of the goalkeeper replacing his compatriot, Hugo Lloris, at Spurs are unlikely to come true. Maignan views his future at the Serie A side and may even get a fresh contract with the Rossoneri in the coming weeks.

AC Milan do not feel any sense of urgency to hold discussions with the 27-year-old’s camp over an extension. But Rossoneri sporting director Frederic Massara and technical director Paolo Maldini are eager to reward the shot-stopper with a salary reflecting his true status.

AC Milan could soon dash Tottenham’s hopes for Mike Maignan’s transfer

Calciomercato notes that Maignan currently earns €2.8m-a-year (£48k-a/w) at AC Milan on a contract running until June 2026. But the Rossoneri will award their six-cap star a greater wage to renew his terms. They also now intend to speak with his agent in the coming days.

Maignan would become one of the highest earners at San Siro should he put pen to paper on a new deal. The AC Milan star would also likely shatter Tottenham’s hopes of a transfer with football.london citing Maignan among the names on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Lloris.

It claimed in February that Tottenham are eying Maignan as a potential successor for Lloris. The north London club are eager to sign their next No1 in the summer sales. They also like Brentford star David Raya, Robert Sanchez of Brighton and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Thierry Henry has lauded Mike Maignan as an ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper

Maignan could be an excellent option for Tottenham to replace Lloris with if AC Milan were open to his transfer. Thierry Henry lauded the stopper – who only cost the Rossoneri £13m to sign from LOSC Lille in May 2021 – for his work against Napoli in the Champions League.

“For me, this goalkeeper is just outstanding,” Henry told CBS Sports (12/04, 20:40). “I have been saying that for a very long time… If it wasn’t for Mike Maignan, then it might have been a 1-1 game. If that game was 1-1, then no-one could have said that it wasn’t right.”
