Report: Rival club now believe they can hijack Leeds' bid to sign 'spectacular' wonderkid

Club Brugge are reportedly confident they can agree on a deal to sign FC Barcelona wonderkid Ilias Akhomach despite rumours this week that Leeds United had won the race for the winger.

According to VoetbalKrant, the Belgian giants believe they can hijack Leeds’ move for the teenage attacker, with the report stating that Brugge are confident their European pedigree and the Whites’ current Premier League position could play into their hands.

Mundo Deportivo had reported earlier this week that Leeds had reached a full agreement to sign Akhomach at the end of this season, with the Barcelona talent’s contract due to expire with the Catalan giants. However, it appears that there is another twist in this transfer tale.

Indeed, Akhomach is regarded as one of Barcelona’s most exciting talents, and whilst it makes sense why Leeds could come close to signing the winger, Brugge coming in to hijack the deal makes even more sense, with the Belgian giants an ideal landing spot for the attacker.

The Jupiler Pro League is one of the best divisions in Europe for a young player to play regular football and to feature on the European stage, and for Akhomach, signing for Brugge could be a better opportunity for the winger than moving to Yorkshire with Leeds.

Moreover, even if the Whites stay up in the division, Akhomach will likely be subjected to a season of fighting for Premier League survival, something that might not be too appealing compared to playing in Belgium with Brugge and potentially turning out in the UEFA Champions League.

Leeds could realistically miss out on Akhomach signing to Brugge

Lauded as ‘spectacular’ by Football Talent Scout, many big clubs will be interested in signing Akhomach this summer, and for Leeds, they could now realistically miss out on the Spanish youth international to Brugge, who could provide better career opportunities than the Elland Road side.

Top-flight football and minutes on the continent would appeal to any teenager, and for Akhomach, the attacker could become a regular for Brugge should the winger decide to move to Belgium rather than Leeds, a decision few would criticise the wonderkid for.
