Leicester City v Blackburn Rovers: Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round

Newcastle United are now showing an interest in a summer transfer for Leicester City star Harvey Barnes. But boss Eddie Howe will have to rival Tottenham Hotspur for his services.

That is according to the Daily Mail, which reports Barnes has admirers at St James’ Park as the Toon establish their summer targets. The Magpies are determined to deliver Howe an influx of new stars. But club chiefs know that Financial Fair Play (FFP) will limit their visions.

Howe and Newcastle agree that this summer will represent a chance to get some marquee names on Tyneside. They feel St James’ is now an attractive destination for the top players after challenging for the top four in the Premier League table and making the EFL Cup final.

Qualifying for a UEFA tournament will also help the Magpies convince bigger-name stars of a move. While the extra number of fixtures would necessitate Newcastle affording Howe a deeper squad. So, the Toon are keen to bolster their ranks throughout their dressing room.

One player whom Newcastle admire as Howe starts identifying transfer targets is Barnes of Leicester. The Magpies coach sees the 25-year-old as a player who would add great quality to his wide options. The one-cap England ace has eight goals and three assists this season.

Barnes has offered Leicester all eight of his goals, plus one assist, over 23 Premier League games under Brendan Rodgers. Only James Maddison has outscored the forward among the Foxes’ squad so far this term with nine. Their next-best stars have scored three goals.

Newcastle United also targeted a transfer for the Leicester City forward last year

Newcastle have long appreciated what Barnes could offer at St James’ with a transfer from Leicester. The Sun reported last July that the Toon were exploring a £25m move for the 25-year-old. But the Foxes fended them off with a £50m valuation for their academy product.

The Magpies saw a window to prise the Burnley native out of the King Power Stadium after he offered six goals and 10 assists in 32 Premier League games in 2021/22. But their efforts to sign a player lauded by Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp would, ultimately, be unsuccessful.

“Barnes is probably one of the biggest talents,” Klopp said, as quoted by the Metro, back in February 2021. “I’m not sure if he is respected or appreciated as much as he should be. He is an unbelievable player, to be honest – a proper Leicester product.”

Now, Newcastle must rival Tottenham if they are to secure a transfer with Leicester in the summer window for Barnes. Dean Jones has claimed that Spurs will ‘definitely’ view him as a target. The north London natives have also admired the winger from afar for a few years.
