Next Leicester City manager: Dean Smith closes in on job

Former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is closing in on a Premier League return with relegation-threatened Leicester City.

Leicester parted ways with Brendan Rodgers last Sunday and appeared to be targeting Jesse Marsch.

However, talks with the American broke down and the Foxes have been forced to turn elsewhere.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday night that former Villa boss Smith had held talks with the Leicester hierarchy.

The move has accelerated rapidly as The Athletic report that Smith is in ‘advanced discussions’ to become the next Leicester manager.

Smith would only be appointed until the end of the season but he seems happy to take that job.

Smith is also preparing to bring former Leicester boss Craig Shakespeare back to the club as his assistant manager.

The pair worked together at Aston Villa and Norwich City, with a reunion now on the cards.

Dean Smith earns another Premier League chance

Smith made his name in charge of Walsall and Brentford but landed his dream job in 2018.

Smith became Aston Villa boss having grown up supporting the club, and he guided Villa to the Premier League in 2019.

After keeping Villa in the Premier League and then securing a mid-table finish, Smith ended up losing his job in November 2021.

Villa’s decision to replace him with Steven Gerrard didn’t exactly go to plan.

Smith’s next move didn’t work either though as he took charge of Norwich City, failing to keep them in the Premier League.

Poor form and performances resulted in Smith being sacked by the Canaries in December but Leicester believe he can keep them away from the Championship.

Leicester appear to have liked Smith for a while; the Daily Mail reported in October that he was on their radar to replace Rodgers.

Now nearing a move to the King Power Stadium, Smith will be looking to prove himself as a Premier League manager once again.
