Houston-based radio host Randy Lemmon has passed away after suffering stroke complications.
Lemmon was best known as the host of GardenLine on NewsRadio 740 KTRH. He hosted GardenLine for over 27 years becoming the go-to guy for horticultural tips and insight into handling Houston’s unique climate.
For those who have listened to Lemmon for advice over the past two decades, you might be saddened to hear of his passing and wondering what happened to the radio personality.
Randy Lemmon died from stroke complications
On January 4, 2023, the official GardenLine Facebook page announced that Randy Lemmon had passed away earlier that day.
“He passed away at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York City of complications due to a stroke. He was surrounded by his loving family,” the statement announced.
It is unconfirmed when Randy Lemmon suffered a stroke. Strokes occur when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. This causes a life-threatening medical emergency which requires immediate treatment. Long-term injuries to the brain can come as a result of suffering a stroke.
Randy Lemmon passed away on his 61st birthday
Born Randal Scott Lemmon on January 4, 1962 to Phyllis and Richard “Dick” Lemmon, Randy tragically passed away on his 61st birthday.
The Lemmon family hail from Whittier, California, but moved to Houston, Texas in Randy’s younger years. In Houston, Randy attended Robert E Lee High School then went on to Texas A&M University. Randy graduated from Texas A&M in 1984 with a degree in Journalism. He was 22 years old at the time of graduation.

Randy Lemmon is survived by his wife of 22 years, Yvonne, as well as their two children, Randal, 21, and Selena, 16.
A look back over Randy Lemmon’s life and career
After graduating from Texas A&M, Randy Lemmon commenced his career in media. He started out as a television and radio producer for the Texas Farm Bureau, years before he would become a radio personality in his own right.
Post-working at the Bureau, Lemmon returned to his alma mater to produce agricultural news and commentary on a network he launched with the College of Agriculture. Lemmon also produced the RC Slocum Show while there.
Eventually, Randy Lemmon made it from behind-the-scenes to in front of the mic. In the mid-1990s, Lemmon started his work with GardenLine on NewsRadio 740 KTRH.
His success as a radio host led Lemmon to author several books about agriculture and gardening.
GardenLine fans pay tribute to Randy Lemmon after lengthy career
As news of Randy Lemmon’s death from stroke complications breaks this new year, GardenLine listeners are paying tribute to the late radio host.
“Listened to the Gardenline more than I ever knew. You will be missed,” one fan tweeted.
“So very sad to hear of Randy Lemmon’s sudden passing. Learned a lot from him, as he has been the voice of Houston gardening every Saturday on KTRH. RIP … here’s to green pastures for a good man,” another wrote. Randy Lemmon has even been described as an “educator at heart” by those mourning the loss of the GardenLine host.
