Stern revealed Cirella was being treated for a rare lymphoma before his death.
“[His] heart gave out,” a heartbroken Stern said, revealing he spoke to Cirella the night before his death.
The radio host expressed frustration at his late friend for waiting too long to address the issue, which he said was curable and treatable.
“I just have been so sad and so angry,” Stern said, adding: “He didn’t take care of himself.”

Stern said he was hopeful his friend would survive his cancer treatment.
The radio host shared that he and Cirella had been close friends for about 40 years.
“He loved me. Ralph was a trustworthy, dear friend who made me laugh every time I was with him,” Stern said, remembering his late friend.
The Howard Stern Show host shared that Cirella frequently accompanied him on television appearances, including America’s Got Talent and The Late Show with David Letterman.
He also credited his late friend for helping him meet his wife, “He’s the reason I met Beth.”
Cirella was a frequent caller and guest on Stern’s show.
The two would share stories on the show and weigh in on pop-culture topics, including movies, television shows, and technology.
Full House actor John Stamos first posted about Cirella’s death on social media early Wednesday: “At the painfully young age of 58, my dear friend, Ralph Cirella, was suddenly taken from us, leaving us all in a state of profound shock.
“He was, without a doubt, a one-of-a-kind soul.”
