Outer Banks‘ protagonist, John B, was introduced as the 17-year-old Pogues leader, so how old is he in the upcoming season 3?
Season 3 of the teen drama will be hitting Netflix on February 23 after a grueling 19 months of waiting.
2021’s finale saw the Pogues unsuccessfully retrieve the lost Cross of Santo Domingo from the Coastal Venture ship. After surviving by the skin of their teeth, the curious teens wash up on the shores of a deserted island, which they rename Poguelandia.
As the Pogues’ chief, does this make John B Routledge the king of Poguelandia? It would be a far cry from the ringleader’s beginnings, who was first introduced as a boat-lover and reckless student with a passion for treasure hunting.
He was about 17 years old in season 1, so HITC takes a look at his age in 2023.

How old is John B in Outer Banks?
Although it’s been nearly three years in real life, time in Outer Banks has progressed much slower. John B is still about 17 years old in season 3.
Why? Well, HITC predicts the events of the season 2 finale occurred in late September 2020 or early October, and if season 3 continues straight from Poguelandia, John B is still the same age as when he was introduced – or age 18, depending on his birthday month.
We know season 1 definitely took place in summer 2020 because John B’s ‘memorial‘, which is etched into a tree trunk, reads “2003 – 2020 John B Routledge P4L”.
The students are also clearly out of school when discussing their summer plans, meaning that they have yet to happen, thus narrowing the season 1 timeline to about June to July 2020.

Fast forward to season 2, it picks up immediately from last season and the Pogues are back in school. Meanwhile, the date in Wheezie’s diary on the day after their return to school is written as September 1.
Overall, Outer Banks seasons 1 and 2 have taken place within a few months of 2020.

What’s the age difference between the cast and their characters?
Time may stand still in Outer Banks’ North Carolina, but the cast has grown into their 20s and even their 30s.
Yes, Chase Stokes plays a character who is practically half his age.
Stokes turned 30 years old in September 2022, so there is a 13-year age gap with John B.
His love interest, Madelyn Cline, is 16 years old in the show and 25 years old in real life.
Kiara, JJ, and Pope are all 16 years old as well, so these are the age differences for each actor:
Carlacia Grant, who plays Cleo, is 19 years old in Outer Banks, but is 32 years old IRL. She has been promoted to series regular for season 3.
