Leicester City v Southampton - Premier League

Eddie Howe is not usually one for excuses. But, after Newcastle United exited the FA Cup at the hands of third-tier Sheffield Wednesday two months ago, Howe admitted that a hectic fixture schedule had caught up with one of the Premier League’s more tight-knit rosters.

“We have a very small squad and have to protect that squad for games ahead,” Howe said; that Owls clash sandwiching a top-flight meeting with Arsenal and an EFL Cup quarter-final vs Leicester City.

“The Leicester game was on the horizon for us. And we picked a team based with that game in mind and another Premier League game at the weekend. We are trying to juggle everything and make sure we were strong enough to win.

“I thought we were but obviously that didn’t materialise.”

Such sobering comments may raise concerns amongst a Newcastle fanbase looking forward to a European campaign next term. The Magpies, presuming they secure a top-seven berth, will have to fit an extra six games into their schedule during the first half of next term. And that is without mentioning qualifiers or potential knock-out ties.

Do not be surprised, then, if Newcastle’s summer revolves around adding both quality and quantity to their ranks.

Newcastle United like Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu

A move for Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu is in the offing, according to The Sun. But while the Ghana international may not be the sort of marquee, eye-catching addition capable of taking Newcastle to a new level, what he would provide is competition for places and some much-needed cover.

Salisu, who may be available for just £15 million with Southampton facing relegation, is a versatile, left-footed centre-half who can also play in a back four or a back three. The former Real Valladolid youngster would probably be fighting a losing battle if he wants to oust Sven Botman from Howe’s XI but the prospect of European football means there would still be plenty of opportunities for Salisu at St James’ Park.

If Salisu wants to start games week-in, week-out, then Newcastle would not be his ideal destination. But if he is happy to take on something of a ‘rotation’ role, playing his part in a larger ensemble cast, then a cut-price £15 million switch may be an opportunity he would consider.
