Mikkel Damsgaard was one of the standout players of Euro 2020, putting in some impressive performances for Denmark and attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur were one of the clubs reportedly keen on the attacker, making a concerted effort to sign him, but 18 months on from their failed move, he is struggling for game time at Brentford.
Damsgaard was a target for Tottenham in the summer of 2021, but the North London club were unable to agree a deal with his then-club, Sampdoria.
Damsgaard did eventually get his move to England in the summer, but things aren’t going to plan for the 22-year-old

He struggled for game time this season, starting just one game for the Bees in the Premier League. Despite his obvious talent, he has found himself behind the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in the pecking order.

It’s a surprise to see Damsgaard struggling for game time, given the level of interest in him just 18 months ago. Tottenham were not the only club keen on the midfielder, with Liverpool and Leeds also linked with him at the time.
Damsgaard has shown glimpses of his quality during his brief appearances this season, and it was clear at the Euros that he has the talent to succeed at the top level. However, he will need to work hard to earn a regular place in the Brentford team, particularly as they establish themselves as one of the better teams in the Premier League.
For Tottenham, this does look like a bit of a lucky escape. After all, if Damsgaard isn’t good enough to get a game for Brentford then he’s surely not got the talent to play for a team like Spurs.
Overall, it’s disappointing to see Damsgaard struggling for game time at Brentford after his impressive performances at Euro 2020. However, he still has plenty of time to fulfil his potential, and we can only hope that the ‘great talent’ can find his form in England sooner rather than later.
