Tottenham Hotspur Training Session

Ally McCoist thinks Christian Stellini will still be discussing all things Tottenham Hotspur with Antonio Conte, despite the Italian’s sacking on Sunday evening.

Daniel Levy pulled the trigger on Antonio Conte hours after Harry Kane scored goal number 55 for England at Wembley on Sunday and he has put his assistant, Christian Stellini, in temporary charge until the end of the season, with Ryan Mason aiding him.

Given the close relationship between Conte and Stellini, former Scotland striker McCoist thinks there is ‘no way’ that the duo will ‘cut ties’ just like that, as he told talkSPORT Breakfast (27/03/23).

When Conte was back home in Italy and resting up after surgery, it was his right-hand man who took over proceedings at Hotspur Way.

The 48-year-old had mixed results and performances, including beating Manchester City on home soil, but also getting knocked out by Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

Nonetheless, when a Spurs supporter put it to McCoist that Stellini could still turn to Conte even though he is out of the door, this was the Scotsman’s response.

“I think you are right,” said McCoist. “I think you are 100% right. If you have worked with somebody in close encounters, with a team, then there is absolutely no way you are going to cut ties. There is no way you are going to cut ties. You will have a conversation, absolutely.

On Stellini still turning to Cotne by picking up the phone, even though he left in such a manner: “I am not saying for a minute that will be the case. I am not saying, it will be like that.

“But if you have a bond with someone like that for a long time, then you aren’t going to cut ties with them. You are going to phone them. You are going to speak to them. You would be naive to think that Spurs wouldn’t come up in the conversation.

On getting Conte’s advice: “I am not sure that will be the case, but certainly they will discuss Spurs, that’s what they do. They talk football.”

WHO NEXT FOR SPURS?

The two names that will probably be high on the lists of Tottenham themselves and the fans will probably be – Mauricio Pochettino and Julian Nagelsmann.

Pochettino is going to be on that list for obvious reasons, and with Spurs fans just wanting to enjoy their football again, then he ticks that box in bucket loads.

But if some think that you shouldn’t go back, then that’s when Nagelsmann comes into the fold following his sacking from Bayern Munich, with Spurs fans being told that he would be the ‘perfect’ fit.
