Nicki Minaj’s latest single Red Ruby Da Sleeze has taken the internet by storm and samples a recognizable 00s anthem.
Within hours of its release, Red Ruby Da Sleeze topped the iTunes chart and was Twitter’s No. 1 trending topic in the US. Minaj has not released any new music in seven months since she dropped TikTok’s beloved Super Freaky Girl.
Barbz i.e Nicki Minaj stans have been highly anticipating the release of the new hit as Nicki has been posting many teasers in recent weeks.
Nicki Minaj introduces new alter-ego Red Ruby
Nicki Minaj has dropped Red Ruby Da Sleeze but claims to still be “on hiatus.” This is because she is appearing in the song as a new alter-ego, Red Ruby.
The night before Red Ruby’s release she posted a photo of herself as the alter-ego on Instagram, writing: “Nicki still on hiatus. This [email protected] right here tho? She outside.”
The lyrics also mention Chun-Li, also known as Nicki’s “bad guy persona.”
Minaj’s Chun-Li is named after the gaming character of the same name who was the first playable female character of any mainstream fighting video game franchise. She first appeared as the alter-ego in the song Fireball off her 2018 album Queen, and again in the songs Chun-Li and The Light Is Coming.
Red Ruby Da Sleeze samples Lumidee’s Never Leave You
If you have already listened to Red Ruby Da Sleeze you may have noticed that it samples a popular 00s Hip-hop anthem.
The song opens with a sample from Lumidee’s 2003 hit Never Leave You (Uh Oooh Uh Oooh) in which the track’s iconic bridge can be heard. The same beat is used as a backing track for the majority of the new Minaj song.
Lumidee’s best-selling record catapulted to number three on the Billboard chart and went straight to number one in ten countries after its 2003 release.
