Are trapdoor spiders poisonous?

A new and rare species of giant trapdoor spiders are reportedly discovered in Australia, but are they poisonous?

Unlike the Amazon snake cat, the made-up creature that took the Internet by storm recently, trapdoor spiders are real and known for their impressive size.

Researchers are worried that the beautiful arthropod is likely to become an endangered species as the majority of its habitat has been disrupted due to human activities for years.

Trapdoor spiders are said to live in the wild and in very few rural towns, but people with irrational fears of spiders, called arachnophobia, still want to know if the newly found species can be dangerous.

Are trapdoor spiders poisonous?

No, trapdoor spiders aren’t poisonous. However, some species of them possess a painful bite, which can last for a few days or cause medical complications, but they aren’t venomous to humans.

The rare species of trapdoor spider which has been discovered in Australia is believed to be in need of protection amid fears of them going extinct.

The newly found spider has been called Euoplos dignita, and since 1970, only a handful of specimens have been preserved in Queensland Museum’s collection.

Meanwhile, the name of the trapdoor species is “Latin for dignity or greatness, in reference to the really spectacular nature of this spider.”

The species was reportedly first discovered in the early 20th century.

The new species can live in wild for up to 20 years

The female trapdoor spiders are typically larger than the male. They can grow up to up to two inches in length and can live in the wild for up to twenty years.

They apparently live in their burrows, in the black soils of the Brigalow Belt in Central Queensland. Currently, Euoplos dignita is found in the rural towns of Eidsvold and Monto.

These animals are more active at night as they sit at the trapdoor of their burrows, waiting to prey on insects passing by.

These spiders do possess venom which is used to subdue their targets, but they are not dangerous to humans.

New discovery terrifies people

Many Twitter users, who aren’t aware that trapdoor spiders are relatively harmless, are dreading them.

One said: “I would put in my contract rider that all events in Australia are to be kept giant trapdoor spider free, and to include hotels and any vehicles transporting me!”

“Australia has discovered a new giant trapdoor spider. Hello! yes, I hate it here. Get me out,” Tweeted another.

A third user wrote: “I looked at a pic of the new trapdoor spider on Faceboook for 5 secs & now they wanna suggest spider posts to me. I have arachnophobia hello, now I have the creepy crawlies.”

“New variety of Trapdoor spider. I’m rethinking moving back to Australia now. Stuff of nightmares” read one tweet.
