The college basketball world was shocked recently to learn that Jim Boeheim is out as Syracuse head coach. Boeheim has spent the last 47 years as the head of coach of Syracuse’s men’s basketball team, but announced his retirement this week.
Boeheim’s time with Syracuse includes 35 NCAA tournament appearances, five Final Fours and the 2003 national championship. He finishes his coaching career second on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball wins list with 1,015 – behind former Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
Adrian Autry has been named as his successor, so let’s find out more about him.
Who is Adrian Autry?
Adrian Autry is the school’s first new men’s head basketball coach since 1976, and the first African-American head coach in the program’s history.
The 51-year-old former point guard played at Syracuse from 1990-94 and led the Orange in assists in each of his four seasons. He made one Sweet 16 appearance during his time with the college and currently ranks fifth in career assists (631) and sixth in career steals (217) for Syracuse.
Autry went undrafted in the NBA but players overseas in Turkey, Germany, Italy, France, Siberia, Belgium and more. He retired in 2005 and returned to the States to begin his career as a coach. He first worked as associate head coach at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School in Alexandria, Virginia.
Autry’s first season as an assistant at Syracuse was 2011-12 and has been the team’s associate head coach since 2017.

Adrian Autry and his wife, Andrea, reside in Jamesville, with a son, Trey, and a daughter, Nina.
They are also parents of a daughter, Aliyah, and a son Adrian Jr., both whom graduated from Syracuse. Aliyah graduated from Syracuse in 2017 while Adrian Jr earned his degree from the University in 2019.
The elder Adrian is not on social media. However his son, Adrian Jr, is, and has shared photos with his parents.

Andrea Autry is on social media but her Instagram is private.
According to her bio she is a graphic designer and marketer by trade and is the ‘coach of Team Autry’.
Adrian Sr’s daughter, Aliyah is a model and is also on Instagram. According to her IG bio she is a model based in Dallas, Texas:

After Boeheim’s departure was announced, Autry provided a statement on what it means to replace the legendary figure.
“There have been very few stronger influential forces in my life than Syracuse University and Jim Boeheim,” said Autry. “They have both played such important roles and without either of them, I am certain I would not have this incredible opportunity before me.
“I have spent much of my time in the game of basketball learning from Jim and am so grateful to him for preparing me to carry on the winning tradition that is Orange Basketball. It’s hard to imagine a world without him on the bench, but together with our coaches, student-athletes and fans, we will build on decades of success as a winning program.”
