Blue Ribbon at Oscars 2023 meaning

The blue lapel ribbon at Oscars 2023 is a part of United Nation’s #WithRefugees initiative.

The United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees has said that people wear the pins “in solidarity with and support for refugees and displaced people around the world.”

Additionally, the blog Super Color notes that the color blue also symbolizes open spaces and freedom. Both these concepts hold a lot of importance in the issue of displacement of people.

Wearing pins that represent such important causes at a high-profile event such as the Oscars helps brings people’s attention to important causes.

Bill Nighy and Cate Blanchett speak about their blue ribbons

When Bill was asked about the blue ribbon at the Oscars he said, “120 million people being displaced and children being in terrible distress, I don’t think that is politics. And that is what this commemorates.”

He further elaborates that the pin is part of a UN initiative and that he wore it at Cate’s request. The Ocean’s 8 star has been bringing attention to the issue in the public events that she attends.

She also wore a blue ribbon to this year’s BAFTAs.

Other celebs that donned the blue ribbon this award season

At BAFTAs 2023 the likes of Colin Farrell, Paul Mescal, Bill Nighy, Daryl McCormack, Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, and more were seen with the blue ribbon. Besides Bill and Cate, Pinocchio director Guillermo Del Toro also wore it.

The blue ribbons are no stranger to the spotlight. They have made an appearance in previous year’s award shows too.
