On Ash Wednesday, February 22, Mark Wahlberg appeared on the Today Show to discuss the religious holiday and promote the Catholic prayer app Hallow for which he is a guest narrator and spokesperson. The actor appeared on the show with what appeared to be a black cross drawn on his forehead.
He has previously said that his faith “is the most important aspect of his life,” but what exactly is his religion and how is it incorporated into his daily life?
Mark Wahlberg says his faith is ‘everything’
When asked in the Today interview what his faith means to him, Mark Wahlberg said “everything.” He added: “It’s afforded me so many things.”
The actor claimed that religion is “not popular” in Hollywood and that navigating his job and faith is “a balance.”
“I don’t want to jam it down anyone’s throat but I do not deny my faith. That’s an even bigger sin,” Wahlberg said. “It’s important for me to share that with people but I have friends from all walks of life and it’s important to respect and honor them as well.”

Mark Wahlberg is a devout Catholic. He once told the Catholic Herald: “Once I focused on my faith wonderful things started happening for me. And I don’t mean professionally – that’s not what it’s about. It’s a much bigger picture than that. I want to serve God and to be a good human being. That’s what I’m praying for, and I recommend it to anybody.” The actor spent 45 days in jail at the age of 16.

The Boston native said that the Catholic element of “discipline” has “done so much for [him].” In light of Lent, Wahlberg explained that he will embrace the aspect of fasting by eating only one meal on Fridays throughout the period up until Good Friday.
He said: “Winning the morning, getting up early, all of these things can be challenges that you can put for yourself and those are again between you and god.”
“I am looking forward to going back to mass regularly. It feels like the same enthusiasm for Christmas when I was a kid,” Wahlberg added.
Wahlberg spent ‘millions’ on his religious drama Father Stu
Mark Wahlberg produced and starred in his passion project, a 2022 religious drama called Father Stu. The film tells the true story of Stuart Long, an amateur boxer who becomes a Catholic priest while suffering from inclusion body myositis.
He also revealed to Insider that he largely helped to fund the project too, having spent “millions and millions” to get it made.
“I slipped the script to a couple of people that I thought maybe would get it, and they didn’t,” he told the Outlet.
