Clinton Morrison claims Djed Spence has been ‘magnificent’ on loan at Stade Rennais from Tottenham Hotspur. He particularly shone against PSG megastar Kylian Mbappe.
Spurs sent Spence to Ligue 1 in January in search of regular game time having struggled for minutes under Antonio Conte. The 22-year-old only played five minutes of Premier League football through four cameos under the Italian. He never came on before the 88th minute.
Life in Ligue 1 has been far more productive for the defender with Spence playing 567 over seven games. He has also started in each available French top-flight fixture for Rennes. The right-back also started the Roazhon Park outfit’s two Europa League knockout play-off ties.

Djed Spence was not one of Antonio Conte’s signings at Tottenham
Conte’s rare usage of Spence gave further weight to the Italian’s remarks when Tottenham signed the defender from Middlesbrough. Spurs paid Boro £12.5m, plus £7.5m in add-ons, in July 2022. But Conte quickly stated that the defender was not a player he had asked for.
“Spence is an investment of the club,” Conte stated in July 2022, via quotes by BBC Sport. “I said ok, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”

Djed Spence is blowing Clinton Morrison away on loan to Stade Rennais
Tottenham bought Spence off Middlesbrough after he shone whilst on loan to Nottingham Forest over the 2021/22 season. The London-born dynamo recorded five assists and a goal en route to securing promotion from the Championship, and also impressed in the FA Cup.

Now, Spence is blowing Morrison away with the Tottenham star’s efforts on loan to Stade Rennais in Ligue 1. The former Republic of Ireland striker particularly appreciated how the full-back handled Mbappe as Rennes beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 at the Parc des Princes.
“We know Djed Spence probably wasn’t because he said to him, ‘I can’t see you playing in this team’,” Morrison said on Sky Sports News (01/04, 12:11).

“And he’s gone on loan now to Rennes and I know it’s a different league, but he’s pulling up trees over there. He’s been outstanding. I saw him play the other day against Mbappe, he was magnificent against Mbappe. He’s a good defender.”
Spence helped Stade Rennais shut Paris Saint-Germain and Mbappe out last Sunday in his ninth appearance on loan from Tottenham across all competitions. Bruno Genesio will try to build on their result when RC Lens visit Roazhon Park this Saturday night in a 20:00 KO.
