Is Luther: The Fallen Sun a sequel or a prequel?

Luther: The Fallen Sun is the first feature film coming from the BBC detective series universe, but is the movie a prequel or a sequel?

Idris Elba plays the titular character John Luther, a police detective who plays by his own rules. The television series first aired in 2010, and the final episode of season five aired in 2019. There have so far been five seasons of Luther, and Luther: The Fallen Sun, a 2023 feature film, is the latest installment.

Fans of the psychological crime thriller series have been on the edge of their seats since 2019 when the finale of series 5 aired, leaving Luther in a tricky spot – to say the least.

Amid the release of Luther: The Fallen Sun, we take a look at what audiences can expect and the film’s place in the Luther timeline.

The 2023 film stars Idris Elba, Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis

Luther: The Fallen Sun will be out in select cinemas on Friday, February 24, and it will be available to stream on Netflix from Friday, March 10.

The movie will see Idris Elba reprise his most iconic role alongside the addition of some serious talent. Award-winning Stand Up star Cyntia Erivo plays Odette Raine, a rival detective, and Luther’s nemesis.

Meanwhile, Lord Of The Rings royalty Andy Serkis plays David Robey, a millionaire serial killer who uses technology to spy and collect information he later uses to blackmail and manipulate people.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is a sequel

Luther: The Fallen Sun will follow on from the 2019 series of the show, making it more of a sequel than a prequel.

Although the show’s creators have said that you do not need to have seen the TV series in order to enjoy the 2023 film.

The official plot is as follows: “A gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.”

What happened at the end of series five?

Spoilers ahead.

Season five ended on a serious cliffhanger. In the final sequence Luther and Alice Morgan, his on-again-off-again love interest and criminal mastermind go head-to-head. After a tense exchange of words about life, love, and their relationship on top of a building site, Alice shoots him.

Wounded and in an attempt to save himself, Luther pushes Alice off of the scaffolding but seemingly changes his mind, catching her by the wrist before she falls. Alice however, cuts herself free from him with a blade and falls to her death.

Meanwhile, DSU Martin Schenk and the force appear on the scene and arrest John Luther.
