Speaking to The Telegraph, Manchester United defender, Lisandro Martinez, has named Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus as the toughest opponent he has faced since arriving in the Premier League in the summer.
Although Jesus didn’t score against Martinez’s Manchester United at Old Trafford when they met in September, he caused all sorts of problems for the United defence and looked to be an absolute nightmare to defend against.
Martinez has been a key figure in the United backline this season, impressing with his composure on the ball and his aggression. However, the Argentine has admitted that he found it tough coming up against Jesus.
It is interesting that Martinez chose Jesus as his toughest opponent. After all, Ivan Toney had a field day with him when United met Brentford, while Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick in the first Manchester derby of the season.
Despite his small stature, Martinez has proven to be a solid defender since arriving at United from Ajax in the summer, and he has quickly adapted to the physical demands of the Premier League.

Intriguingly, Jesus, just like Martinez, stands at 5’9, showing that height isn’t necessarily the biggest of issues for Martinez when he comes up against a striker.
Jesus has been a key player for Arsenal since joining the club from Manchester City, and while he has struggled with injuries as of late, Jesus has still been a key figure in the Gunners’ title charge.
Martinez’s comments about Jesus are a testament to the quality of the Arsenal striker, and they highlight just how highly he is rated by his fellow professionals. With Jesus set to return from injury in the coming weeks, he could provide the Gunners with the boost needed to get over the line and win their first league title in 19 years.
