Leeds United defender Robin Koch has admitted that initial contract talks are underway despite interest from Newcastle United.
It’s maybe a tad early for summer transfer rumours but clubs up and down the country will be planning moves.
One surprise rumour emerged last week with Newcastle allegedly keen on signing Leeds defender Robin Koch.
Reports from Sport1 suggested that Koch was considering his future with Newcastle showing a firm interest.
Jamaal Lascelles is widely expected to leave Newcastle this summer and Koch could be viewed as a replacement.
Newcastle’s interest in Koch seemingly goes back to his Freiburg days as Record reported in 2020 that the Magpies wanted him.
Koch ended up joining Leeds instead but Newcastle may push to finally sign the German at the end of the season.
Robin Koch admits Leeds United contract talks
Koch has now spoken to Spox over in Germany and the subject of his future naturally came up.
The centre back’s contract expires in 2024, meaning he is now into the final 18 months of his deal at Elland Road.

Koch admitted that initial talks over a new deal have been held between Leeds and his agent.
However, Koch doesn’t want to think about a new deal right now, believing it could be a distraction.
Koch wants to focus on Leeds right now as the Whites attempt to avoid relegation and stay in the Premier League.
Koch is therefore parking a decision on a new contract until the summer, leaving Leeds to worry a little over his long-term future.
“During the season I want to distract myself as little as possible with future planning,” said Koch. “Initial talks are currently underway between the club and my advisor. Towards the end of the season and during the summer break I will deal with it. Now my focus is 100 percent on our games and goals,” he added.
If Koch doesn’t commit to a new deal in the early weeks of the transfer window, Leeds will be faced with a tough decision.
Do they cash in whilst they can or hold out hope that they can convince Koch to commit his future to the Whites?
Newcastle will be watching very closely and may hope to pull off a raid on Leeds this summer as Koch holds off on a contract decision.
