The Elite Eight of this year’s NCAA Tournament tips off Saturday with the first game of the day seeing the third seeded Kansas State Wildcats taking on No.9 seed Florida Atlantic Owls.
The Wildcats (26-9, 11-7 in Big 12) have been one of the most exciting teams to watch during March Madness, beating Montana State and Kentucky before coming out of a 98-93 overtime thriller vs. Michigan State.
K State are led by head coach Jerome Tang. Tang was previously an assistant coach under Scott Drew between 2003 -2022 at Baylor, winning the 2021 NCAA Championship with the Bears.
What we know about Jerome Tang’s parents and ethnicity
The Wildcats head coach was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, West Indies on October 7, 1966. Jerome Tang’s parents are Paul and Bano, and he migrated with them to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands until age 10 before moving to Texas.
He spent his childhood with his sister Kim Tang, and also spent time growing up in Minnesota.
Jerome’s mother comes from an Indian background, and his father is half-Chinese.
“I’ve got a little bit of everything in me, so that is pretty cool,” he once said.
Tang is the first Black men’s head basketball coach in Kansas State history and just the fifth minority men’s head coach in school history.

“That actually gave me goosebumps when someone that I’m really close to called to tell me about it as I was trying to research the job,” Tang added when he found that out.

Jerome Tang’s wife is Careylyen (Rey) Tang whom he married on August 2, 1997. The couple met when Jerome worked at Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland, Texas, whom he built into a powerhouse during his ten years (1993-2003) there.
August 2nd, 2022 marked their 25th wedding anniversary. Tang posted a photo to his Instagram account saying ‘Happy 25th Anniversary to my closest friend and the joy of my life.’
As for the rest of Jerome Tang’s family, that would include son, Seven, and daughter, Aylyn. Jerome also adopted two sons, Lamar and Richard Hurd.
Avyin studied at Baylor University in Texas, and Aylyn graduated from high school on May 2022.
