A Polish woman by the name of Julia Wendel is now claiming to be Madeleine McCann who was reported missing in 2007.
Madeleine McCann disappeared from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on the night of May 3, 2007. The three-year-old was with her younger twin siblings at the time whilst her parents were out of the apartment having dinner nearby.
Following reports of Madeleine being missing an extensive search operation was carried out and has continued for over a decade; making it one of the most reported missing person cases in history.
A woman claiming to be McCann has now set up an Instagram account with the name ‘I am Madeleine McCann,’ but who is Julia Wendel?
Polish woman Julia Wendel claims to be Madeleine McCann
Julia Wendel is a Polish Instagram user living in Germany who has now come forward claiming that she can provide “evidence” that she “could be Madeleine McCann.”
Maddie was born in May 2003, meaning that she would now be 19 years old, in 2023. Wendel is thought to be 21 but she believes that her age might not be correct. Julia reportedly revealed that she was given up for adoption as a child and as she dug deeper into her childhood she couldn’t ‘connect the dots.’
Upon further investigation, she stumbled upon the British girl who went missing in 2007. Wendel claims that she was unaware of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance prior to this.
Julia Wendel claims she will take a DNA test
Julia Wendel created an Instagram account under the handle ‘I am Madeleine McCann’ on Tuesday, February 14, and has already accumulated over 779,000 followers.
The bio originally stated: “I think I can be Madeleine. I need DNA test. Police investigators from UK and Poland try to ignore me. I will tell my story in posts here. Help me, I need to talk with Kate and Gerry McCann.”

The bio has since been updated to: “Thank you for support! Kate and Gerry McCann agreed for DNA test!”
Julia alleges that the DNA test is now confirmed and the McCanns have approached her to take a DNA test. She reportedly claimed via her Instagram story: “I talked with someone from Madeleine’s family and I will have a possibility to talk with Madeleine’s parents tomorrow and DNA test will be done soon.”
According to the Daily Star: “The family are taking no chances, they are willing to look at all leads. It is important they look at all of the factors, the girl does look similar. There’s no disputing that. If what she says is true, there is every chance it could be her. It all adds up.”
Julia Wendel makes comparisons to Madeleine McCann
Wendel has shared suggestions on her Instagram as to why she thinks she could be Madeleine. Julia claims she has the same mark as Maddie on her eye.
In another post, she says that she can’t remember a lot of her childhood. However, her earliest memory is of “holidays in a hot country with white apartments.”
Julia further alleges that they both have a freckle in the same area under their eye. She also says that they have moles in the same place, including two small dots on her leg.
