Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison on March 3, 2023, by Judge Clifton Newman, whose son, Brian, died a couple of months before the trial.
On Friday, January 3, Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison. The news comes weeks after Netflix released Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal, a documentary based on the events of the Murdaugh family.
Amid the trial, Judge Newman’s personal life also took center stage as people revised the death of his son.

What happened to Judge Newman’s son Brian?
Judge Newman’s son Brian died after suffering a heart attack that was triggered due to a blood clot in his heart.
The incident took place on January 3, 2023. Brian decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and was known to be Columbia’s youngest-serving councilman.
Apart from Brian, Judge Newman is also a proud father to three other children. His daughter, Jocelyn is a circuit court judge.
Meanwhile, his other two kids, Corwyn and Kellee have been pursuing a career as an engineer and a mathematician.

What we know about his wife
Judge Newman met his wife, Patricia while the two attended Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. Following their graduation, they started a family.
The pair have always worked together and through their family growing together. They decided to relocate from Ohio to Columbia, South Carolina.
The decision stemmed from the idea that their children would have to travel a long distance to attend integrated schools.

A look at his verdict
Judge Newman did address Murdaugh during the verdict and said: “I don’t question at all the decision of the state not to pursue the death penalty. But as I sit here in this courtroom and look around at the many portraits of judges and other court officials and reflect on the fact that over the past century, your family — including you — have been prosecuting people here in this courtroom, and many have received the death penalty, probably for lesser conduct.”
He further noted: “It has already ended for many who have heard you and concluded that it’ll never end but within your own soul, you will have to deal with that. And I know you have to see Paul and Maggie during the nighttime when you’re attempting to go to sleep. I’m sure they come and visit you, I’m sure.”
Murdaugh’s defense team now plans to appeal his conviction.
