Liverpool transfer news: Reds could now sell

As Liverpool prepare to lock horns against Real Madrid in the 1st leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash on Tuesday, journalist David Lynch has said that Kostas Tsimikas could potentially be sold this summer.

The Greek left-back, signed for just £11.75 million (Guardian) in 2020 has been an ‘astute’ signing for Jurgen Klopp’s men. Ably deputising for Andy Robertson in his absence, the 26-year-old has been a solid, if not spectacular option for the German boss to call upon.

However, it seems as if Liverpool would be open to selling Kostas Tsimikas in the summer, with him being in the second last year of his contract if an offer comes at their doorstep.

Despite being hailed by Klopp as ‘spectacular’, perhaps the thinking behind reportedly considering letting the former Olympiacos man could be to bring in a signing who could perhaps even take Robertson’s place, despite Owen Hangreaves once saying his set-piece threat could be a key factor behind him staying in the side.

While one can continue to speculate, journalist David Lynch told Born and Red that Liverpool could indeed consider selling Kostas Tsimikas in the summer.

“Tsimikas’ contract situation is an interesting one. I think that’s one to keep an eye on going into the summer, because I don’t believe there’s talks going on with him at the moment, suggesting if a decent offer came in, it’s one Liverpool could look at. He’s one of the few seriously saleable assets Liverpool have got in their squad at the minute.”

Upgradeable area of the squad

As mentioned earlier, there is no denying that Kostas Tsimikas has been an excellent servant for Liverpool during his time at the club.

However, it must be said that for the Reds to consistently stay at the top, they must improve the quality of their depth options and even during a season where Andy Robertson has not been at his brilliant best, one simply cannot see his understudy threatening to take his place.

That is a major red flag and if Liverpool can bring in a player after the reported sale of Kostas Tsimikas who could potentially even succeed Andy Robertson, that would be a positive development.

Lastly, the club do not have many sellable assets, as the journalist mentioned and to fund their big-money plans in the transfer market, many players such as Tsimikas may have been deemed surplus to requirements.
