Jill, 32, and Derick, 34, appeared on the most recent episode of the podcast, Sounds Like a Cult.
The podcast talks about “modern day cults” in pop culture.
Isa Medina and Amanda Montell host it and try to answer if certain groups are really cults.
Jill and Derick appeared on the podcast to talk about their family’s show, the cult of reality TV, and Jill’s childhood.
The host asked her last question, which was about power structure.
She asked them who the leaders were in reality TV and their shows, 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On.
Jill said that the network, the viewers, and mostly her dad, Jim Bob, 58, were the leaders of the show.
DERICK SPILLS IT
Derick said that Jill told him her dad acted the way he did on set because he was afraid of getting fired.
“One of the advantages, unfortunately, to the way he did it, like manipulating everyone, was that the network only had to deal with one person,” he said.
“Like he said, like a pimp, ‘I can give you the services of these families. I’m not going to ask if they want to be involved in this on this level, but I will give you all the life events of all these kids of mine.'”

“And they just have to deal with one person. They don’t have to get it from everyone,” Derick told the hosts.
Derick said that he never signed anything, but Jim Bob would still provide information about Jill to the network.
HOLIDAY BUMMER
Duggar fans were left feeling sorry for Jill when she recently revealed a sad childhood memory.
During a Q&A with fans on her Instagram Story, Jinger responded to a fan who asked: “What is your favorite Christmas memory?”
She answered: “One Christmas my parents gave each of us a decent-sized plastic container full of candy…and topped it with a new toothbrush and toothpaste!”
“I saved the container until it broke last year… it was that memorable!”
Many of her responses, including that one, were shared on Reddit.
One fan wrote: “To be honest I find her favorite Christmas memory kind of sad. I realize finding it sad comes from an initial position of enormous privilege but I can’t imagine the best Christmas gift I ever got being a bucket of candy.”
“I was thinking the same thing. It’s very sad to me that her favorite memory (not gift) was a generic gift that was just candy. It wasn’t a personalized gift to her. It wasn’t a fancy gift. It was an easy, cheap gift to give a bunch of children you can’t afford,” a second Reddit user said.
“If that was her best gift/memory I can only imagine how all the other years went.”
A third added: “I wouldn’t be surprised if they had the money for gifts but just wouldn’t spend it. I could see this gift being given around the time they were living in the 3 bedroom house and Jim Bob spent $200k trying to run for US Senate.”
