Tottenham Hotspur v Nottingham Forest - Premier League

Jamie Weir has spoken about how Ryan Mason has been behind ‘a lot of the big tactical decisions’ during Antonio Conte’s absence at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

When Antonio Conte, who is facing the sack at Spurs, was back home in Italy recovering from surgery, the Sky reporter claimed that Ryan Mason was the brains behind some big tactical calls, including during their win over Manchester City.

This should be pretty exciting for the Spurs faithful to hear because, if Daniel Levy does make the call to sack Conte, then there is every possibility that Mason takes charge until the end of the season.

The 31-year-old has been here before when he took to the Tottenham hot seat when, another one of Levy’s master calls, saw the trophy-laden coach, Jose Mourinho, sacked days before the League Cup final. How did that one work out, Daniel?!

This scenario involving Conte is far different because it seems as though he’s asking to be booted out, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright baffled by why the Italian decided to take the job in the first place given what is happening now.

Nonetheless, whether it’s Conte or Mason, Spurs need to protect that fourth spot with Newcastle, Liverpool and Brighton gunning for them, with Sky reporter Jamie Weir dropping the following claim about Tottenham’s assistant live from the training ground, as he told Sky Sports News (22/03/23 at 2:45 pm).

“Ryan Mason is a bit more experienced than he was a couple of years ago,” said Weir. “It’s my understanding that in Antonio Conte’s absence last month in Italy when he was recuperating after his surgery.

“A lot of the big tactical decisions came from Ryan Mason. That decision against Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur stadium. That decision to have Eric Dier step into the midfield when Spurs were on the attack, it came from Ryan Mason.

“I have heard a number of coaches being infusive in their praise of just how promising of a prospect Ryan Mason is as a future manager, so he has learnt from Antonio Conte. He has learnt from Jose Mourinho and other managers that have been at this club.

“It may well be that he is that safe pair of hands to see them through until the summer.”

LEVY IS A BIGGER ISSUE THAN CONTE

At the end of the day, Conte might be the one to get the boot this coming week, but he isn’t the biggest issue at Hotspur Way.

If Conte does leave, then Tottenham’s problems will still be standing and Daniel Levy will probably be the biggest issue.

Until the Spurs chairman, alongside owner Joe Lewis, head for the exit door, then nothing will change, whether it’s Jose Mourinho or Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout.

Or even a possible return for Harry Redknapp, the Spurs boss was asked about replacing Conte recently.
