Is Unfiction on Netflix from the movie Missing a real series? HITC investigates.
If this movie didn’t have you on the edge of your seat then you must have been watching it standing up.
Looking across the movies of 2023 so far, we’ve been introduced to a slate of exciting new thrillers and one of the very best comes from the innovative Missing.
Directed by Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, the screen-life movie is a sequel of sorts to the 2018 movie Searching which starred John Cho. This time around, on the other hand, we have Storm Reid playing June Allen, an 18-year-old who investigates her mother’s mysterious disappearance in Colombia, growing increasingly resourceful as she gets to the bottom of the case from her computer.
While the film itself will leave you somewhat breathless by its end, you may find that a certain detail was intriguing enough to lead you here. So, is Unfiction from Missing a real Netflix series?

Is Unfiction a real series on Netflix?
In both the first and final act of Missing, June is seen watching a series on Netflix titled Unfiction. However, it’s a fictional series and was devised for the purpose of the movie.
We see that the show is being viewed on the screen towards the start of the film. It then pops up again at the very end and it’s revealed that June’s story, the one that we’ve watched play out, has been dramatized by actors in an episode of the latest season.
Ultimately, we learn that Unfition is a true crime-inspired series that adapts real-life stories into episodic thrillers.

When June is watching the episode, we witness a glimpse of the final act of Missing being re-enacted by other performers. However, June decides to exit Netflix and we then see a smiling picture of her and her mother as the desktop background.
Considering the popular streamer has unveiled such recent true crime-inspired series as Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and The Watcher, it’s not surprising that some audiences may believe Unfiction is a real show but it isn’t.
‘I was not afraid to ask questions’
Although Unfiction isn’t real, the technology at June’s disposal in Missing is and Nia Long (she plays June’s mother, Grace Allen) recently voiced her thoughts to ScreenRant after the interviewer admitted the tech and apps that feature in the film made them feel old:
“I was like, ‘Wait, what is this? What does this do?’ I was not afraid to ask questions, but then embarrassed that I had to ask questions. Because everyone’s kind of like. ‘You don’t know that?’ And I’m like, ‘…No.’”
As for Nia’s role, she added: “I consider myself a part of everything that’s happening, just in terms of the world of technology.”
