Joe Cole urges Chelsea to agree to a new contract for Mason Mount as he wants to stay at the club. The midfielder is also a transfer target of Liverpool with his deal ending next year.

The 24-year-old is an important part of the ranks at Stamford Bridge but faces an uncertain future in west London. He has featured in 31 of the Blues’ games across all competitions so far this term. Mount has also scored three goals and six assists yet may leave this summer.

Chelsea are weighing up their options to avoid Mount entering the final year of his current contract. But no further talks over a new deal will occur during the current campaign. That is according to The Athletic, which reports the Blues have shelved all talks until the summer.

Mount has rejected several offers from Chelsea to extend his contract over recent months. But the Blues’ issues on the pitch have seen club chiefs shift their focus to improving their results. They will revisit his contract in the summer or approve a sale without fresh terms.

The problem for Chelsea is that Mount is seeking £240k-a-week to sign a new contract, the Daily Mail reports. He wants any new deal to place him alongside their other senior players and new signings. Yet Chelsea’s reluctance has also seen Liverpool target Mount’s transfer.

Joe Cole urges Chelsea to give Mount a new contract as Liverpool target a transfer

The Daily Mail adds that Liverpool are now advancing their long-term interest in a transfer for Mount amid his stuttering contract talks with Chelsea. The Reds have long admired the 36-cap England star from afar. Jurgen Klopp is also plotting a huge overhaul of his midfield.

But Cole does not believe Mount wants to follow in his footsteps and forge a transfer from Chelsea to Liverpool. He switched Stamford Bridge for Anfield as a free agent in 2010 after failing to agree on a new deal. Now, the former England ace urges Chelsea to keep Mount.

“He’s a leader [and] he sacrifices himself for the team,” Cole told 90min. “He wants to stay at Chelsea, I’m sure he does. I don’t for the life of me understand – and I don’t know the dealings, they’re probably far apart on where they’re valuing each other.

“He probably thinks: ‘Where do I sit?’. He’s out the team now, which is a dangerous position to be in for Mason and for Chelsea. Football is very fickle, we can forget what a good player Mason Mount is.

“I think Chelsea need to remember what a great player he is. He will come good. [Mount’s contract] would be the top of my list – there must be some middle ground to solve it.”
