What did KSI say? Influencer to take social media break after racist slur

After KSI apologized for using a racist slur in a now-deleted Sidemen video, netizens want to know, what did the YouTuber say?

British YouTuber, rapper, and boxer KSI began his career on YouTube in 2009, posting gaming videos and comedy skits. He has since become one of the most popular YouTubers in the world, with over 23 million subscribers and billions of views across his channels.

As well as his involvement in the popular YouTube group The Sidemen, which owns a restaurant chain and Vodka brand, KSI has also released multiple top 40 rap songs and albums, and in 2020 he made his professional boxing debut, defeating fellow YouTuber Logan Paul in a highly publicized match.

On April 3, KSI took to Twitter to issue an apology after he sparked outrage for using a racial slur in a Sidemen Sunday Countdown video.

“I wanna apologise for saying a racial slur in a recent Sidemen video. There’s no excuse, no matter the circumstances, I shouldn’t have said it and I’m sorry,” he wrote.

“I’ve always said to my audience that they shouldn’t worship me or put me on a pedestal because I’m human,” the tweet continued. “Im not perfect, I’m gonna mess up in life, and lately I’ve been messing up a lot.”

The streamer also said that he would “take a break from social media for a while,” amid the scandal, but did not indicate what this would look like.

What did KSI say?

On Sunday, KSI and the Sidemen posted a video from their Sunday Countdown series, which is based on the game show Countdown.

In the game, contestants choose between two stacks of letter tiles, one containing vowels and the other containing consonants. They have 30 seconds to form the longest single word they can, using nine letters.

KSI formed the offensive word “p**i.” During the video, he said ” I don’t mean this maliciously, but the word is *bleep*. *Bleep*. I’m sorry. We need points. I don’t… guys, come on!”

The word was beeped out in the video but Simon “Miniminter”, one of the Sidemen, picked up a dictionary and said “I’m looking. Pakistani is in the dictionary. Sadly, it’s not (the right answer),” making it obvious what the word had been.

Netizens respond to the slur

Netizens were quick to respond to KSI’s use of the racist slur. In response to his apology one fan wrote: “That’s appreciated bro, but we don’t have to be ‘lowered from a pedestal’ or ‘not a role model’ to avoid clear racial slurs.”

South Asian BBC presenter Bobby Friction said: “I had this racial slur thrown at me & got physical beats by racists for my entire childhood. Genuinely upset that @KSI (a guy my children love) did this & thought it was funny.”
