Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali is hoping that West Ham United do not give up on Gianluca Scamacca with the Italy international struggling in the Premier League, speaking to Tuttomercatoweb.
It’s not a great reflection of the attacking talent at Roberto Mancini’s disposal that, ahead of Italy’s Euro 2024 qualifier against England in Naples on Thursday night, a man who has been stuck on the bench at relegation-threatened West Ham in recent weeks looks likely to start in the ‘number nine’ role.
Scamacca has been included in David Moyes’ XI only 11 times in the Premier League; the Scot himself admitting that his £35 million signing is struggling in England.
But, as Carnevali points out, there are a few reasons why the striker is finding life difficult in claret-and-blue.

“Scamacca had an injury and was out due to physical problems,” Carnevali explains. “But it’s normal for a young Italian to find some difficulties in a championship like the Premier League.”
Scamacca recently spent a month on the sidelines due to a knee injury. Upon returning, Michail Antonio had established himself once again as West Ham’s go-to centre-forward.
Carnevali, however, hopes that West Ham do not do like they did with Sebastien Haller; cash in on Scamacca before he’s had a chance to get up to speed with life in a new league and a new country.
“I hope that these clubs too have time to wait for the young players,” Carnevali adds. “Who need time to settle in.

“Playing in the Premier League isn’t that simple. It’s easier to find, for example, the right place like (Napoli’s Giacomo) Raspadori did in an Italian club; already knowing the league and the language.”
‘We believe in him’
Reports suggest that Scamacca could be on his way back to Italy this summer. Long-time admirers Juventus allegedly see the 24-year-old frontman as a potential replacement for the out-of-sorts Tammy Abraham.
“Gianluca got us a few goals in Europe and a few goals in the Premier League. So we’ve got to hope he gets back to that,” Moyes said recently. “We believe in him. We really see good things from him and we really want him to get the goals.
“But obviously, when you’re a striker and you’re not scoring, then confidence can become a problem.”
“He’s a very good finisher and someone who can lead the line, because of his stature. He links the game up very well if we can play into his feet or his chest. I think he offers us a different dimension to what we’ve had in the past. Sometimes, getting used to that can take a bit of time.”
