Ian Wright has admitted that he ‘didn’t know’ who Son Heung-min was when he first signed for Tottenham Hotspur following his 100 Premier League goals.

On Saturday, as Cristian Stellini’s Tottenham beat Roberto De Zerbi’s free-scoring Brighton, Son Heung-min created history by becoming the first Asian player to score 100 Premier League goals.

That record-breaking moment came in typical fashion because, cutting onto his right foot from the left channel, he curled his effort into the top corner from outside of the box.

In 2015, with Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout, Spurs put £22 million on the table (FourFourTwo) for the 30-year-old and he arrived from the German side, Bayer Leverkusen.

At first, the all-action forward struggled in north London and there was the possibility that he could have left after just 12 months.

But he stayed put in an ever-growing Spurs team and now he is a club legend with Ian Wright lauding the player, as he told Premier League Productions (10/04/23 at 2:30 pm).

“Magnificent achievement for him,” said Wright. “From Korea, then come from Germany to here. I didn’t know too much about him when he came.

“But it doesn’t take long to see that, depending on his mentality and how hard he wants to work, what he would be capable of doing when you look at what he’s got. He’s got pace, left foot and right foot.

“A brilliant work rate. You think, if he gets it right, ‘then he is going to score a lot of goals’ – and it doesn’t surprise he has now done that.”

SON A TOTTENHAM LEGEND

In recent months, with Kane hitting 200 Premier League goals and breaking Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscoring record, he has been the one hitting the headlines.

But his partner in crime shouldn’t be forgotten about because what he has achieved at Spurs is out of this world.

Of course, he will want to top it all off with a trophy, but he will need Kane to stay beyond his current contract for that to happen.
