Liverpool FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Gary Neville has claimed that Virgil van Dijk ‘wasn’t fancying it’ as Gabriel Jesus got the better of him during Liverpool and Arsenal’s 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday.

The Manchester United legend added that Andy Robertson was also ‘shook up’ early on because of Bukayo Saka and his involvement in Gabriel Martinelli’s opening goal.

Three of Liverpool’s backline were booked during the match, including Virgil van Dijk for hurling down Gabriel Jesus as he skipped past the Dutchman when the scores were 2-0.

Not many players can get past the 31-year-old, but in recent times, those ice-cold veins have been steaming hot because he has lost his defensive edge this season.

Whilst Jurgen Klopp’s side will be thinking how, after coming back from 2-0 down, they didn’t win the game, from a defensive aspect, there were still some issues.

Most of them occurred in the first half, which was touched upon by Gary Neville, who spoke about two players who struggled, as he told Sky Sports Premier League (09/04/23).

On Robertson: “He will be a bit shook up, I think, Robertson from that goal (Martinelli),” said Neville. “He will just know, that little movement from Saka. It was really clever. He’s up against it, a top player.”

On VVD: “Oh, deary me! Deary, deary, deary me! That’s desperation and not frustration. That is Virgil van Dijk not fancying it against Jesus. Not wanting to run back. He was beaten, well-beaten.”

HAVE LIVERPOOL PROVIDED MAN CITY WITH TITLE EDGE?

In years gone by, it’s been Liverpool battling Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for the Premier League title.

But, this season, all the way from eighth place, they have to take a back seat and watch Arsenal and Man City trade serious blows with one another.

A number of weeks remain, and both teams will feel it’s in their hands, but all of it will depend on that showdown at the Etihad.
