Michael Owen and Leon Osman were critical of Fabinho’s stamp on Mario Lemina during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Wolves on Wednesday night and how he ‘has history’ for these kinds of challenges.
The Liverpool midfielder, to his and his teammates’ bewilderment, was shown a yellow card for his challenge at Anfield because they seemingly felt that Lemina was the guilty party.
Wolves’ January signing was chasing his bad touch and proceeded to slide for the ball as Fabinho was coming into shot, with the Liverpool man going over Lemina’s legs and catching the player high on his leg.
Whilst Fabinho and the Liverpool players were surprised he was shown the yellow card, when they see back the challenge, they will realise that a red card should have been dished out.
But this isn’t the first time the Brazil international has been involved in a very risky tackle of late because he did it against Brighton and Evan Ferguson not so recently.
That was touched upon by Leon Osman, with Michael Owen in agreement that the player in question knew what he was doing, as they told Premier League Productions (01/03/23 at 10:35 pm).
“He is certainly over the ball,” said Osman. “He is late and he has a history of miss-timed tackles of late. There is stretching, no doubt.

“But he goes past it with his left foot and it’s contact with that knee of Lemina. I certainly think he knew what he was doing there.”
Owen added: “To be perfectly honest with you, I definitely think he knows what he is doing. He has been given a yellow card, so the referee has obviously seen it and decided that the yellow was sufficient.”
FABINHO HAS GOT LUCKY
Even with VAR, the call from the on-field referee wasn’t overturned which just goes to show how the powers that be still don’t know how to run their ship.
Referees are there to protect players, and in that instant, Fabinho should have been shown a straight red.
Either way, with Manchester United visiting Anfield on Sunday, you can bet your bottom dollar, with Casemiro on the other end, the duo are going to be cagey, aggressive and on the front foot in that midfield.
