Dustin Hoffman bids farewell to his old friend
The duo cut their teeth at the Pasadena Playhouse in the 50s before embarking on legendary careers.
“I met Gene in acting school, at the Pasadena Playhouse, when he was 27 and I was 19. We used to play congas together on the roof, trying to be like our hero Marlon Brando,” Hoffman said.
“And Gene was like Brando, in that he brought something unprecedented to our craft, something people didn’t immediately understand as genius.”
“Powerful, subtle, brilliant. A giant among actors. I miss him already.”
Stars pay poignant tribute
Prince William expressed his sorrow, saying he was “so sad” to hear the heartbreaking news about Gene and his wife.
He added: “Hackman was a true genius of film who brought each and every character to life with power, authenticity and star quality.”
American actor George Takei honored Hackman’s enduring impact, stating: “Gene’s work will live on forever. We have lost one of the true giants of the screen.
“Gene Hackman could play anyone, and you could feel a whole life behind it. He could be everyone and no one, a towering presence or an everyday Joe. That’s how powerful an actor he was.”
Last sighting
The actor was last spotted holding onto his wife Betsy’s arm while he used a cane on March 28, 2024, during a rare public appearance.
The couple were on a dinner date in Santa Fe, New Mexico, heading into Pappadeaux’s restaurant.
