Manchester City v Newcastle United - Premier League

Alan Shearer has hailed Anthony Gordon and how he ‘fits perfectly’ at Newcastle United and under Eddie Howe.

The Newcastle legend did add that Gordon, who started his side’s defeat to Manchester City over the weekend, will have to improve his numbers at the club.

During the January transfer window, the Champions League-chasing side paid Everton £45 million for a player (Sky Sports) that had only scored three Premier League goals this season and none since the summer transfer window slammed shut.

Someone like Miguel Almiron is an example to Gordon and how he can take that very next step.

Whilst the former MLS star has hit a bad patch of late, he has struck ten Premier League goals this season when many thought his career at St James’ Park was over.

Nonetheless, Alan Shearer hailed the new kid on the block, how he suits a manager like Howe, but what he needs to do to take that next step, as he told Premier League Productions.

“He fits Eddie Howe’s profile perfectly as a player,” said Shearer. “Young and hungry. He can, without a doubt, improve him. He’s fit and he can do the job Eddie wants him to do. Get up and get back. Create.

“He’s going to have to improve on his stats, in terms of his goals and his assists. But Eddie feels he can do that, but that’s why I said he fits the profile as a player, perfectly.”

PLAYMAKER NEEDED

Newcastle now have a lot of ball-carrying players that need that playmaker to knit everything together.

A midfielder of James Maddison’s ilk is going to be needed for the summer, with the Leicester City star heavily linked.

If the Magpies can secure Champions League football, then it seriously boosts their chances of signing players like him.

But if they don’t, then it wouldn’t be a surprise if the England star does land a gig at a team in the Champions League.
