Roy McGrath has died after a nearly three-week manhunt, the lawyer of his wife, Laura Bruner, confirms.
The former chief of staff to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was captured by FBI agents on Monday, April 3 in Tennessee. This capture arrives nearly three weeks after McGrath failed to appear in federal court. McGrath was facing federal wire fraud and theft charges, as well as allegations of falsifying a government document.
“During the arrest the subject, Roy McGrath, sustained injury and was transported to the hospital,” the bureau said in a statement on Monday. McGrath had suffered a gunshot wound but as of yet, details of his death remain unclear, whether it was self-inflicted or not.
The FBI have said they are in the process of “reviewing an agent-involved shooting.”

As news of a nationwide manhunt for Roy McGrath broke, it was reported that Laura Bruner, his wife, was cooperating with law enforcement officials. The US Marshals Service issued a wanted poster for McGrath Tuesday, March 14.
Laura Bruner was “concerned for his well-being,” according to McGrath’s attorney Joseph Murtha, Fox Baltimore reported at the time. Murtha added that Bruner was “unaware of his whereabouts.”
Bruner, 36, was reported to be staying with friends over the past weeks. The couple had been living in Naples, Florida together.

On Monday, April 3, Laura Bruner’s attorney, William Brennan, confirmed the news that her husband had passed away. Brennan said Bruner was “absolutely distraught” from the news.
She has yet to give any statement on her husband’s indictment or his death. Bruner’s only request after news of the manhunt emerged was “that the media respect her need for privacy at this very difficult time,” Newsweek reports.
Brennan has been speaking on Bruner’s behalf throughout the case as it was publicized far and wide. A supposed tell-all book titled Betrayed: The True Story of Roy McGrath, penned by Ryan C Cooper, made it to the top of Amazon‘s best-sellers list mid-March. Brennan informed media that Bruner had no clue about the author or their true identity.
Laura Bruner and Roy McGrath’s wedding took place after indictment
The couple’s nuptials were subject to scrutiny last September, as it came to light they had got married after Roy McGrath’s indictment. This was revealed in September 2022, when prosecutors sought to introduce potentially damaging text messages from Bruner’s as evidence.
Bruner had allegedly detailed accounts of the couple’s trips abroad over text messages. McGrath claimed he was working for the two trips in question, one on a European cruise in August 2019 and another stay in Naples, Florida. This meant that he was paid for his time. Prosecutors were hoping to admit the text messages as evidence disproving McGrath’s claims.
However, as McGrath and Bruner tied the knot since he was indicted in October 2021, Bruner was allowed to claim spousal privilege. This means she could avoid testifying against her husband.
