Twitter’s API plan error message explained

On March 6, Twitter users reported that their API has been down, once again, it appears the problem first began at around 11:50 a.m. ET. One of the errors encountered by users appears when trying to click on Twitter links.

The error message reads: “Your current API plan does not include access to this endpoint, please see  more information.”

Frustratingly, when users try and click on the link, the same error message appears.

Solution whilst Twitter is currently working on API plan

Twitter’s API for interpreting URLs appears to be down. Therefore, if you click on a link, it will not work until Twitter fixes the issue. Instead, users can manually copy the URLs and paste them.

Twitter support then gave users some insight into the problem as they shared in a tweet: “Some parts of Twitter may not be working as expected right now. We made an internal change that had some unintended consequences. We’re working on this now and will share an update when it’s fixed.”

Thankfully, Twitter has shared a positive update, stating: “Things should now be working as normal.”

After the glitch was fixed Elon Musk shared his thoughts on the situation: “A small API change had massive ramifications. The code stack is extremely brittle for no good reason. Will ultimately need a complete rewrite.”

Twitter APIsbecome subscription based

The Twitter API enables users to have access to Twitter in more advanced ways. The API allows users to moderate conversations, improve the Twitter community, and curate content.

The Twitter API is now subscription based, as the official Twitter Development account, confirmed that on February 9 the platform “will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1.” It further stated: “a paid basic tier will be available instead.”

This differs from other online platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, which provide free access to their APIs.

Users voice frustration by error message

Users have taken to the platform to share their frustration, here are some of their tweets:
