Eddie Howe has now done something at Newcastle which nobody has managed since Sir Bobby Robson

Eddie Howe has now achieved something at Newcastle which hasn’t been done since the days of Sir Bobby Robson.

What’s the story?

Well, this is a special accomplishment for Howe – to say the least.

After Newcastle recorded an emphatic 5-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday night, the Magpies now have 53 points after 28 Premier League games this season.

Howe will undoubtedly be proud of that, and he will surely be even prouder when he learns that no other Newcastle manager has done this since Sir Bobby Robson did so in the 2002/03 Premier League campaign.

Of course, Alan Pardew amassed 65 points in the 2011/12 Premier League season as he guided Newcastle to fifth – however, that side had only won 47 points after 28 games.

Therefore, Howe is overseeing the best campaign of any Newcastle manager for roughly 20 years, which is a tremendous achievement.

The Magpies remain in third place after the 5-1 drubbing of West Ham, three points above Tottenham in fifth with a game in hand.

Eddie Howe could become a Newcastle legend

Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi have already told The Athletic that they want Howe to be their Sir Alex Ferguson, and while it will take a lot for him to match the Scot’s reign at Old Trafford, he is well on his way to becoming a Newcastle legend.

The 45-year-old is not just winning games through good fortune – his efforts seem highly sustainable, and could genuinely take Newcastle to heights they haven’t hit for many years.

For example, the Magpies have the best defence in the Premier League this season with only 20 goals conceded in 28 games, while they are also sixth for most goals scored with 47 to their name.

With one or two stellar additions in the summer transfer window, Newcastle are looking likely to win at least one piece of silverware next term, while also making a big impact in the Champions League.
