Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced the company will axe 7,000 jobs this year, but how many employees does the organization have currently?
The Walt Disney Company is facing a shake-up. Not only has Bob Iger returned to his post as chief executive of the entertainment giant, but he has plans to streamline the company and workforce.
Last month, Iger announced that jobs would be cut at Disney, with many employees across the board facing the sack. With thousands of employees jobs on the line, it has prompted questions about how big Disney’s workforce is to begin with. Let’s take a look at how many are under the Disney employment umbrella in 2023.

How many employees does Disney have?
As of October 1, 2022, the Walt Disney Company employed around 220,000 workers. Of this total, approximately 166,000 were employed in the United States.
Statistics database Zippia suggests this figure is slightly higher, at 223,000 employees. They report that this workforce is made up of 55% women and 45% men.
The Walt Disney Company is not just comprised of those working to create their films and TV shows. The company also includes teams responsible for consumer products, interactive media, as well as the theme parks and resorts. It is unclear, as of yet, which areas of the Disney workforce will be most affected by the 7,000 jobs cut.
Disney workforce to be down by 3% after 7,000 jobs are cut
As 7,000 Disney employees are now facing their job being axed, Disney faces losing nearly 3% of its workforce. Of the 220,000 figure, 3% totals 6,600.
This is in an attempt to streamline the company’s operations in an increasingly difficult media landscape. It is all part of Disney’s multibillion-dollar cost-cutting initiative.
As jobs will be cut across the board, it is unclear which areas of the business will be most affected by the initiative.

Why is Disney laying off so many employees?
A memo sent to staff obtained by CNN shed light on Bob Iger’s decision to layoff so many staff. The memo reveals that the layoffs will come in three waves, the first arriving this week. More layoffs will follow in April, with the final wave “before the beginning of the summer,” the memo explains.
“The difficult reality of many colleagues and friends leaving Disney is not something we take lightly,” Iger said in the memo. “In tough moments, we must always do what is required to ensure Disney can continue delivering exceptional entertainment to audiences and guests around the world – now, and long into the future.”
Copies of the email memo sent to employees has since leaked to Twitter.
The Walt Disney Company is one of many major organizations who are shaking up their workforce. Amazon also has announced that they are planning to cut 9,000 jobs.
