Did Kristen Welker use a surrogate?

On April 23, 2021, Kristen Welker announced she and her husband were expecting their first child via surrogate.

While on The Today Show, the former NBC anchor told viewers: “After years and years of trying, I’m having a baby girl with John and we are so excited.

“It’s with the help of a surrogate. I was 40 years old when I married John in March 2017 and we immediately started to try to have a baby.

“It didn’t work immediately. So we thought, ‘Let’s just go to a doctor as a precaution.’

“First round of IVF, it went really well and I thought, ‘I’m going to be pregnant within the next few months, no problem.'”

Kristen further explained that doctors discovered her uterus was too thin to carry a child.

She also shared: “And I thought, ‘OK, well, let’s fix it. There has to be something that we can do to fix this.’”

“Being matched with a surrogate is one of the most extraordinary experiences I have ever had.”

John Hughes also added: “Our surrogate has been amazing.

“I can’t explain just how wonderful she’s been.

“For her, this was about giving something to us that she felt a deep connection to.”

On May 14, 2024, Kristen announced she and John were expecting a second baby via surrogate.

The Meet the Press host told People: “This is an extraordinary moment, there’s no doubt about that.

“Margot has been telling her classmates that Mama and Dada are getting her a baby brother for her birthday.”

While discussing her decision to use a surrogate for her second baby, she also said: “The response was overwhelming.

“It brought me to tears. I can’t tell you how many people reached out to say, ‘I am struggling with infertility. Here is my story.’

“I have tried to be in touch with all of those people, to help them know they are not alone.”

When did Kristen Welker marry John Hughes?

Welker married Hughes in 2017 at the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia.

The hotel is a block from where they had their first date.

He proposed to her when she was covering the 2016 campaign trail for the network.

Welker told Hughes she would only be in Washington DC for 24 hours.

During her short stay, he visited her, took her to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and popped the question.

“I wanted to ask her outside in a place you could walk by years later and tell your kids that this was the spot we got engaged,” he told the The New York Times.
