Stan Collymore has tweeted his delight at John McGinn returning to form with Aston
Villa after beating Newcastle United. He revels in his progress under boss Unai Emery.
The midfielder had endured a tough start to the season after replacing Tyrone Mings as the Villans’ captain last July. Steven Gerrard awarded McGinn the armband having admired his leadership on the pitch. But the responsibilities appeared to weigh heavy on his shoulders.
McGinn’s confidence clearly took a hit as his performances fell far below the 28-year-old’s accustomed standards. But the arrival of Emery to their helm in November brought a new lease of life to the Scotland international’s game. McGinn has often been the player of old.

John McGinn shines as Aston Villa beat Newcastle United
Emery’s system has allowed McGinn to produce a number of positive performances, as was the case as Aston Villa beat Newcastle. The Glasgow native floated an inviting ball forward to Ollie Watkins, who cushioned his header down for Jacob Ramsey to break the deadlock.
McGinn continued to combine well against the Magpies, with the Aston Villa skipper rising to a game-long tussle with Newcastle defender Dan Burn. He would also help start a move leading to Watkins scoring. The St Mirren product’s grit was often on show in Birmingham.

What has Stan Collymore said about John McGinn’s display?
Aston Villa’s result against Newcastle proved to Collymore the benefits of the Villans hiring a ‘quality’ coach like Emery. He also praised the Spaniard’s influence in McGinn’s return to form. It was just the latest of his classy displays since the Villa Park club replaced Gerrard.
“Aston Villa should always be the destination for a quality and seasoned manager, not a crèche,” he wrote on Twitter. “What happens when the penny drops and vanity gives way to due diligence. Delighted personally for McGinn, back to his top-class best. Love the kid.”
Emery helping McGinn rediscover his best form as shown against Newcastle is a key factor behind Aston Villa’s push for European qualification. The Villans tick on another level when the Scot is on song. He can be the complete operator in their engine room when confident.
