Paul Merson says VAR robbed Arsenal off a define penalty against Bournemouth after the ball struck Chris Mepham’s hand inside the box.
While some of the Gunners players seemed convinced that it was a spot-kick, the decision was not given. The club legend said last weekend that his former side did not deserve a penalty against Leicester City after Bukayo Saka was fouled inside the box.
But this time around, Paul Merson certainly believes that Arsenal deserved a penalty against Bournemouth, which was not given by VAR.

On Sky Sports, Paul Merson said VAR should have given Arsenal a penalty against Bournemouth, saying, “It was a half-cleared corner and it definitely hit Mepham’s arm, it went to VAR, but did not give it.”

Several of the club’s fanbase expressed their discontent over the decision online, especially considering they were losing 1-0 to the Cherries at the time.

While Chris Mepham’s arms being in the air after jumping to head the ball out of danger during a corner is natural, the ball striking him in such a position is deemed a spot-kick in most situations.
Keeping that in mind, Paul Merson is right in saying that VAR perhaps should have given Arsenal a penalty against Bournemouth.
Regardless, the hosts were far from their best against the visitors and now only have a 2-point lead over Manchester City, who defeated Newcastle United 2-0 to kick off the Premier League weekend.
