An old riddle about a frozen Adam and Eve has resurfaced this spring and is baffling internet users.
Riddles grew in immense popularity over the Covid-19 pandemic, as lockdown forced people to find new ways to entertain themselves at home. Those looking for a daily challenge found them in the form of a riddle, as the brain teasers were shared far and wide across social media. And it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere soon.
The latest riddle to go viral draws inspiration from the Bible. Let’s take a look at how the thousand-year-old story of Adam and Eve has been reworked into a modern riddle.

The ‘Frozen Adam and Eve’ riddle
As is the way with riddles, the wording can vary. But the general wording of the Adam and Eve riddle goes something like this…
“Scientists were digging in Antarctica and found two bodies frozen in a block of ice. Immediately, one of the scientists knew it was Adam and Eve. But how did they know?”

Riddle answer explained
Scientists may be smarter than most. But to instantly know the identity of two frozen bodies from one look hints that there’s an obvious sign to be observed.
The answer is: They had no belly buttons.

How does that work? Well, in the Christian Bible neither Adam nor Eve were born but created. Adam was created by God from dust, then Eve was created from Adam’s rib. All progeny of Adam and Eve have belly buttons, as they were born from the first two humans. A belly button is scar tissue from where a baby’s umbilical cord was once attached when in a mother’s womb. Neither Adam nor Eve have a belly button, as they were never born.
Adam and Eve’s belly buttons have stumped people for years
Although this riddle correctly states that it is unlikely Adam and Eve from the Bible would have belly buttons, the two figures have had such physical attributes in other media.
“You know what’s funny? Paintings of Adam & Eve where they both have belly buttons. Think about it,” one Twitter user joked. “Take as much time as you need.”
This quote has developed into its own ‘Adam and Eve belly button’ riddle, with some not understanding that neither figure would have a belly button. It has the same answer as the ‘frozen’ riddle.
