Nottingham Forest stick by Steve Cooper as Crystal Palace & Tottenham eye 43-year-old

Crystal Palace and Tottenham will have sat up to take notice as Steve Cooper supposedly found himself on the brink of being sacked by Nottingham Forest.

It was the Daily Mail who claimed that Crystal Palace are keen to hire the 43-year-old as a replacement for Roy Hodgson at the end of the season, while The Athletic believe Spurs admire the Welshman.

Earlier on Wednesday, it was said that Cooper could now be handed his P45 at the City Ground.

However, that was quickly rubbished by Nottingham Forest.

What’s the story?

Well, a recent story from the Telegraph claimed that Cooper faced the sack if he lost to Wolves on Saturday 1st April.

That clash ended in a 1-1 draw, before Cooper watched his side suffer a crushing defeat in the relegation battle on Tuesday night as Leeds recorded a 2-1 win at Elland Road.

TalkSPORT then claimed that the defeat in Yorkshire could now cost the Welshman his job.

Journalist Alex Crook said: “I think it’s looking pretty poor now for Steve Cooper. No wins in eight games and the vibes coming out of Nottingham Forest are that Steve Cooper will become the latest managerial casualty.”

However, Nottingham Forest moved quickly to release an official statement placing their trust in Cooper, in an attempt to end “false and disruptive reporting” by news outlets.

After losing to Leeds, Nottingham Forest now find themselves 17th in the Premier League – outside of the relegation zone only on goal difference.

Why do Crystal Palace & Tottenham want Steve Cooper?

You may be asking why Crystal Palace and Tottenham are such big fans of a manager whose side sit 17th in the Premier League.

That would be a fair question, although Cooper has done a remarkable job to even get Nottingham Forest to this point, which is where the admiration from Crystal Palace and Tottenham presumably comes from.

The 43-year-old took over at Nottingham Forest last season with the Reds sat bottom of the Championship, before remarkably galvanising the side and leading them to promotion via the Play-Offs.

While things could have gone better for Cooper at the City Ground this term, there is no denying that he is a talented coach.
