Even before the actual ceremony could commence, a moment shared between Ashley Graham and Hugh Grant on the 2023 Oscars red carpet with the mention of “Vanity Fair” has caught everyone’s attention, so we have explained its meaning here.
The 95th Academy Awards is currently being held at the Dolby Theatre and the biggest of Hollywood stars are in attendance at the annual event.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel opened Oscars 2023 with a monologue, which mocked the defining moment from last year when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on the stage.
However, people can’t stop talking about Ashley’s interview with Hugh on the red carpet and a rather cringy ‘vanity fair’ moment.

Hugh was one of the first celebrities Ashley interviewed on the red carpet and the former’s responses to all of the supermodel’s questions have raised eyebrows.
Ashley begins the viral interview by asking the Hollywood actor what he likes the most about the award ceremony, to which he responds by saying: “It’s fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It’s Vanity Fair.”
While it seems like Hugh made a reference to the term in a different context, Ashley assumed he was talking about the 2023 Oscars’ after-party hosted by the magazine Vanity Fair.
Ashley says in response: “Oh yes, it’s all about Vanity Fair, that’s where we need to let loose and have a little fun.”
While Hugh looked confused, fans couldn’t help but cringe at the super awkward moment.
Meaning of Vanity Fair
It seems like Hugh was referring to the 1848 novel by William Makepeace Thackery or simply used to describe the star-dubbed event.

Even though many know Vanity Fair as a famous pop culture and entertainment magazine, the term is used to define an extravagant society or community that runs high on worldly pleasures and luxury.
Meanwhile, the supermodel appears to have confused it with the magazine, which is also playing an important role tonight as celebrities will be hopping from Governors Ball to the Vanity fair Oscars Party once the main event concludes.
Ashley Graham’s red-carpet moment gets a lot of attention
After watching Hugh’s brief interview with Ashley, fans are eager to share their opinions as the moment appears to have left them divided.
Many feel Hugh’s responses to Ashley weren’t specific and rather vague. When Ashley asked the actor what he was wearing, he simply says “suit” which was made by his tailor, without naming the actual designer as he couldn’t recollect the name.
He downplays his cameo in Glass Onion when the model asks what he looked liked the most about his role.
Reacting to the moment one fan said: “Hugh Grant was rude but Ashley Graham’s questions weren’t the best… they gave the other interviewers better questions to ask”
“Lol that’s a bit dramatic. I love Ashley and Hugh… but let the man be lol. My favorite was when he goes “I was in it for about 5 seconds” hahaha,” said another.
A third fan wrote: “I don’t think Ashley and Hugh Grant were talking about the same ‘Vanity Fair’”
