Michael Owen and Paul Scholes agreed that it was right to award Everton a penalty in the first half of their 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday.
Although, the former Manchester United midfielder felt that Dwight McNeil, who was fouled by Jonjo Shelvey, was ‘buying’ the penalty, as Owen added that it was ‘soft’, but the correct call.
That opened the scoring for the away side, but Sean Dyche’s men were then pegged back when Brennan Johnson equalised after a frantic, cagey and aggressive opening 20 minutes from the relegation-threatened duo.

Before Abdoulaye Doucoure could restore Everton’s lead, Seamus Coleman felt he should have had a penalty of his own when he argued that Jack Colback clipped the back of his leg.
But those calls were waved away by the on-field referee and then, the Man of the Match, Brennan Johnson, added his second in the 77th minute with a cool and composed finish.
Nonetheless, Michael Owen felt that a second penalty should have been awarded to the Toffees, whilst Scholes wasn’t too sure, as they told Premier League Productions (05/03/23 at 2:55 pm).
On McNeil penalty: “I think it was a little soft,” said Scholes. “I think Dwight McNeil does really well in going down. Jonjo Shelvey has a little swipe. I am not sure how much contact there is. But I think Dwight McNeil does really well in buying a penalty, and therefore, giving Everton a chance to take the lead.”
Owen added: “I totally agree with Scholesy. I think it’s very soft. I do think it’s a penalty. But I do think it’s soft. He could easily stay on his feet. Jonjo Shelvey is an experienced player. You shouldn’t be dangling a leg like that. Once you dangle a leg, then nobody is going to say no.”

On Coleman’s penalty shout: “I think he has a case for it,” added Owen. “I think he gets his foot clipped. He first gets his foot blocked by that planted foot of Colback’s, then he gets kicked by the left foot as well, on the sole of his boot. I think that’s a penalty. I would be edging on the side of giving that one.”
Scholes also added: “It’s debatable. I think it’s very close. I agree with Micheal, about the planting foot there, no. But I think it’s that left foot. If the left foot makes contact with him, then I think that’s a penalty.”

THUNDEROUS RELEGATION FIGHT
Both of these teams are fully aware that they are in a relegation dogfight, and from the get-go, the tempo set by the teams portrayed that.
In the end, the point was the fair result, that’s if those in Forest colours don’t have too many issues with the McNeil penalty and Coleman felt that Everton should have had another.
Either way, these teams aren’t running away anytime soon, and come the final few weeks of the season, they will be scrapping it out for those precious division-saving points.
