Arsenal have confirmed that they have handed midfielder Mo Elneny a new contract lasting until the end of the 2023-24 season at The Emirates – and the player’s Instagram post has prompted reaction from Alex Iwobi and Breel Embolo.
Elneny, 30, has been very much on the sidelines this season. A number of injuries, including a thigh issue and now a knee problem have limited the 91-time Egypt star to just eight games in league and cup. But, Arsenal have kept him.
Renowned for being a real team player and happy to sit on the bench at the North London club, Mikel Arteta and Edu have chosen to give him a new deal. His previous contract at Arsenal was due to expire at the end of the current term.
Elneny posted a touching message to Arsenal fans on Instagram. Making him the club’s longest-serving player having joined back in the winter window of 2016, he underlined to supporters that the club is his “love” and his “happiness”.

Arteta will be hoping Elneny returns from injury, soon. The midfielder underwent surgery in January and it remains unclear how long he will be sidelined for – though it is likely that he will be back on the pitch some point next month.
Having clocked up 155 appearances for the Gunners, he is one of the elder players in the team and a leader off the pitch. With Thomas Partey injured, he is also needed. But, the club have signed Jorginho to ease their midfield options.
Elneny joined Arsenal seven years ago from Swiss side Basel where he played alongside Switzerland star Embolo. The striker described him as a “legend” after penning a new deal. Ex-Arsenal and current Everton star Iwobi also reacted.
