A beer company endorsing a TikTokker has set the internet alight, but who actually is Dylan Mulvaney, why is Kid Rock mad at Bud Light and why is everyone boycotting Budweiser?
In a bizarre internet story that would have made no sense less than a few days ago – a popular beer brand has partnered with an influencer, and the response online has been frenzied, to say the least.
The beer brand in question was Bud Light, and the drink company’s endorsement of a queer internet personality has rustled feathers in certain corners of the web.
If you’ve missed the drama unfolding here’s everything you need to know about who Dylan Mulvaney is, why Kid Rock is mad at Bud Light, and why everyone is mad at Budweiser.
Who is Dylan Mulvaney?
Dylan Mulvaney is a TikTok influencer who has been documenting her journey as a trans woman during her first year of transitioning.
Mulaveny’s popular videos have seen her rack up over 10 million followers, and the queer star was even congratulated by Vice President Kamala Harris for celebrating her “365th day of living authentically.”
Mulvaney works with a number of brands across various industries, and like most influencers, often uploads sponsored content. To celebrate March Madness, Mulvaney took to her Instagram to post a video in collaboration with Bud Light:
Why is Kid Rock mad at Bud Light?
Country rock star Kid Rock is hardly known for keeping his mouth shut when it comes to things that frustrate him, though his online musings are typically less gun based than his short rant this week was.
Seemingly in response to Mulvaney’s Bud Light content, the 52-year-old took to Twitter, where he uploaded a video that began with him showing the camera he was wearing a MAGA hat, before telling his followers that “grandpa’s feeling a little frisky today.”
“Let me say something to all of you and be as clear and concise as possible”, Rock continued, before continuing to fire an automatic rifle at four crates of Bud Light. Rock finished the video by flashing his middle finger at the camera as he denounced Bud Light and its parent company, Anheuser-Busch, with the use of the f-word.
Rock does not appear to have made any previous comments about Mulvaney that would suggest a disagreement between the pair, though the plaudits he received from several anti-establishment pundits suggest they believe his video to have been in direct response to the brand deal:
Why is everyone mad at and boycotting Budweiser?
So why is everyone boycotting Budweiser? In response to Mulvaney’s collaboration with Bud Light, some people online have vowed to boycott the drink, which is a lighter version of the well-known beer, Budweiser.
In essence, Bud Light’s newly found detractors appear to be aggrieved with the company simply for partnering with a transgender person.
For example, one Twitter personality leading the charge is Oli London, an author of a book that critiques modern gender theory, who has posted a series of tweets accusing Mulvaney of transitioning in order to make money and lying about her experiences, with little evidence to support such theories.
Explaining the decision to partner with Mulvaney, Anheuser-Busch told Fox in a statement: “From time to time, we produce unique commemorative cans for fans and for brand influencers, like Dylan Mulvaney. This commemorative can was a gift to celebrate a personal milestone and is not for sale to the general public”.
